ESW BILL SCOTT SCULPTURE CENTRE

A new lottery-funded building for Edinburgh Sculpture Workshops, to be located next to their present site in Leith.

The new building proposes 30 artists studios, large workshops for wood, metal, plaster and mixed media, a new education room and project room, administrative accommodation and apartments for visiting lecturers and sculptors.

The site occupies a piece of land that straddles a defunct railway cutting and the street level 5.5m above. This allows for the workshops, located on the lower ground level, to have direct access for easy servicing and open out to a sheltered external workspace. The street level is then less formidable as a two storey bar housing the offices and apartments. Behind this stretches the large inhabited roof over the workshops below, which houses the 30 studio spaces.

Robust, flexible and economical industrial construction methods are employed that will allow the internal spaces to be adapted to suit the future needs of the building users making this truly a building dedicated to the production and manufacturing within.
