JINGDEZHEN POTTERY VILLAGE
Appointed by the Greenland Group, we were asked to develop a strategy for rehousing many of the local crafts people creating the infamous centuries old, Jingdezhen porcelain. The current places of work were far from adequate, let alone safe and so a new quarter on the edge of the existing city was chosen to create homes linked to workshops and retail spaces. Tourism had increased massively and so a new type of interface was required where visitors could see the pottery being made, speak with the makers and also purchase goods. At the same time it had to retain the intensity of Jingdezhen and give the new place character. Added to that that, the village would be built amongst small limestone hills creating an unforgettable drama.
