In 2020, Suhuha were invited to assist in the design of a new banqueting hall and theatre as part of a larger International Summit Venue. The site is located in the wider Beijing region and is set between a series of tranquil lakes and rugged mountains. Our ambition was to create a strong relationship both between these two buildings, their dramatic natural setting and use ancient Chinese references to deliver a strong cultural identity for the structures.

We used simple bold forms with minimal detailing, reflecting many ancient Chinese construction techniques. The buildings sit side-by-side on a raised platform around a lilly pond which flows out towards the lakes. The ceremony of dignitaries moving from banqueting hall to theatre promenades around the pond at a lower level, under a sheltered walkway, reminiscent of those within the the Prince's Palace and other great Chinese gardens.

Internally, the structural elements are expressed, with dappled light passing through the exterior cladding to create a space worthy of a temple or cathedral. Materials were also selected to give a timeless appearance and suggest a place steeped in Chinese history.
