BEIJING NATIONAL SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA

Working closely with Tsinghua Institute of Design, Suhuha assisted with the development of the shell and communal spaces of the building. The city client was keen that the building reflected it's intended use and so we developed an aesthetic and spatial configuration which attempts to relate to the rhythms and movement experienced when listening to and playing music. There is a structural rigour to the arrangement of the rehearsal halls and so this rigour was amplified through the addition of further layers that provoke a sense of drama.

The front of the building provides for entrance activity as well as relaxation spaces above over looking the city. All the main spaces within the building are then linked from the entrance by way of a central elliptically shaped spine which pulls in dappled day light from the roof through the heart of the building.

Interestingly, city planning limits meant that to satisfy the brief there was a need for the upper parts to overhang sightly, and so this condition was exaggerated to create a unique building form which moulds the lower band inwards as the building sits on the surface.

A simple palette of concrete and bronze work together to provide a feeling of both mass and delicacy, similar to a musical score where the heavier bass tones work with the higher pitches of the violins to create a seamless harmony.
